Ecko Action SportsBroadcast Commercial, 2009 In 2006, I joined the West Coast team of the venerable Marc Ecko Enterprises, where I worked as Head of Production, Film & Video for three years. A long-time fan of hip-hop fashion and culture, I was excited to work for one of the first mass-market brands, which I witnessed grow from simple t-shirts to an all encompassing brand that had multiple facets in young women and men’s lifestyle – Ecko Unltd, Ecko Red, Complex Magazine and Zoo York to name a few. When I joined the company, they were in a massive upward swing in terms of growth and visibility. We were doing really progressive media creation built around EckoTV, which initially was one of the first video forays in point-of-sale locations, such as Macy’s and other department stores around the world. We also leveraged EckoTV into the digital space, where we were creating an entire catalog of video content built in the days before YouTube’s dominance. (side note: I remember us emailing Chad Hurley and Steve Chen offering some sort of promotional deal in exchange for some ecko t-shirts and they actually emailed us back. Things were different then.) The other major endeavor that I took on at Ecko was in-house directing and creative directing well over 50 broadcast commercials for their various brands. The variation was really a great challenge – where we would work with X-Games champions and Ecko Unltd., the High School Musical stars Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale with Ecko Red, Olivia Munn and Complex Magazine and legendary skateboarders and Zoo York. It was an exciting time to be working with the company and I will post more of my work there soon. |
