Vice: High ScoreBroadcast Documentary Series Pilot, 2015 High Score was a pilot that I served as showrunner and director for Vice. Our team shot in Seattle for a week, covering one of the biggest eSports events of the year – Valve’s DOTA2 tournament, The International with over $18 million in prize money. There has been a lot of talk and rhetoric over the past few years as eSports continues its ascent into a global pop-culture context. Is it really a sport? Are these kids playing video games and getting paid for it? These aren’t athletes. They’re geeks and nerds living in their parents’ basement. And on and on… No more. High Score draws a hard line in the sand – these are modern-day warriors, the prototypical athletes of the 21st century. They simultaneously build off of the sport culture that came before but also signal a profound paradigm shift in how we experience sports and how we relate to the athletes at the top of their game. High Score will be the definitive documentary series on the world of eSports, focusing mainly on the players, their strict training regimens, and personal lives, High Score will also shine a light on the coaches, companies, and controversies that, together, constitute the world of competitive gaming. High Score will position itself as the show of record for the future of digital sports. |
